We all have an innate passion that drives us to be successful. Tony Robbins has discovered something even more important than the science of achievement.
I feel very privileged to have spent the last two years on an incredible journey with Tony Robbins. There's one lesson that he holds above all others. I first wrote about this in my article, "Tony Robbins: Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure."
And with the official release of his book, Unshakeable, I'd like to highlight what Tony Robbins calls his greatest obsession today. In his own words:
"For decades, I was focused obsessively on the science of achievement - on learning to master the external world and on figuring out ways to help people break through and solve every challenge. But I now believe in my heart and soul that the art of fulfillment is an even more important skill to master. Why?Because if you master the external world without mastering the internal world, how can you be truly and sustainably happy? That's why my greatest obsession today is the art of fulfillment."
The Art of Fulfillment
In life, we cannot choose what happens to us. At all times, however, we have the power to decide what each moment of our life means. Ultimately, we have a choice. As Tony Robbins sees it, at every given moment in life we can choose to either live in a beautiful state or we can choose to live in a suffering state. The same exact event can mean something entirely different depending on if you believe that life happens FOR you or TO you.
One of my favorite Tony Robbins quotes from Unshakeable is, "I can tell you the secret to happiness in one word: progress." According to Tony Robbins, the art of fulfillment can be boiled down in two principles: (1) You Must Keep Growing, and (2) You Have to Give.
- You Must Keep Growing means that in order to sustain your happiness you must feel like your making progress. "Everything in life either grows or dies," says Tony Robbins. "That goes for relationships, business or anything else. If you don't keep growing, you'll become frustrated and miserable, no matter how many millions you have in the bank." Growth isn't just about growing your financial future, it's about making progress in all areas of your life. To be truly happy, you must continue to make progress in your life.
- You Have to Give means actively looking for ways to contribute. "You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give," said Winston Churchill. And according to Tony Robbins, "Whenever I ask people about the most fulfilling aspects of their lives, they always talk about sharing with others. The true nature of human beings isn't selfish. We're driven by our desire to contribute. If we stop feeling that deep sense of contribution, we can never feel truly fulfilled ... money doesn't' change people. It just magnifies who they already are."
What I love about Tony Robbins' new book, Unshakeable, is that while it provides a step-by-step guide to money mastery (see related articles, "Tony Robbins: How to Retire Rich" and "Be the 1 in 10 Americans who do NOT make this 401(k) mistake"), it also focuses on what's really important in your life. Tony Robbins took the time to interview 50 of the most financially successful people in the world and then breaks down what you need to know to be financially free - this time in fewer than 200 pages. And then he goes a giant step further by sharing what you need to know to be truly happy.
As the saying goes, "Money can't buy happiness." Only a combination of progress and contribution will ensure that you attain fulfillment - something more valuable than any amount of money you have in your possession.
